No ordinary building, the Lodge is a unique structure built almost entirely with natural materials. The walls are made of strawbales and plastered with mud and clay from the surrounding land. There is a 'living' green roof which was made with the earth excavated from the site along with the grasses and wildflowers, blending the building with the landscape from which it came.
Inside, its large main room - The Reciprocal Room - is circular and drenched in light with long windows and French doors opening out onto a wildflower meadow with lake, forest and mountain views.
Overhead exposed roof beams spiral over visitors' heads leading up to a huge 3.5 meter diameter dodecagon skylight. Known as a 'reciprocal' roof each beam supports the other to remain upright.
This symbolism of reciprocity, interdependence and interconnectedness relates in many ways to the essence and soul of the building (which is why it features in the Lough Mardal Lodge logo!); from the support of all the many volunteers whose hands molded and pressed the mud into the walls, to all the locally sourced materials - the building literally came from the land around it - to the building now providing a beautiful space for connecting and bringing people together. The building is a sustainably-built, environmentally-friendly, living, breathing example of great Irish eco building design.
