HEDGE LAYING

Huge thanks and respect to our neighbour Mark for the steady hands and serious skill in the ancient craft of hedgelaying. Over 300m has been laid so far in the last few weeks (Winter 2025/6).

The tradition of hedgelaying developed in the 16th century that involves the creation, management and maintenance of hedges  as a way to contain livestock, frequently replaced in modern times by timber/wired fencing. Craftsmen (lovely Mark) use techniques passed down through generations combining artistry and skill in the severing of stems of trees and bending them at an angle, weaving them together so they are intertwined and laying them at angles to promote growth and strenght, creating a dense living barrier. It enhances the beauty of the landscape and they also provide a vital wildlife corridor for birds, animals and pollinators to foster biodiversity by providing new habitats.

Today, hedge-laying is valued not only for its ecological benefits but also as a connection to our rich agricultural heritage.
